A Malibu-based rehabilitation center has agreed to a $3 million settlement following a lawsuit involving adult film star Adria Rae. The legal agreement comes after Rae suffered permanent brain damage during her stay at the facility for ketamine addiction.
The $3 million settlement and the $1.25 million payout
The $3 million settlement was recently approved in court to resolve a legal dispute involving the Malibu Lighthouse Treatment facility. As the report notes, the total amount will be significantly reduced by attorney fees and medical liens, leaving Rae with an estimated $1.25 million. Because the 27-year-old is currently incapacitated, her mother will continue to serve as her legal guardian and conservator, managing all financial and personal affairs on her behalf.
A month of deteriorating health at Malibu Lighthouse Treatment
Adria Rae, legally known as Litzy Lara Banuelos, entered the Malibu-based treatment center in January 2024 to address a severe ketamine addiction. Before her admission, court documents indicate she was consuming between five and six grams of the substance daily.. the lawsuit alleges that her physical condition deteriorated rapidly while under the facility's care, leaving her frail, dehydrated, and unable to perform basic daily functions such as eating or walking.
The 40-minute cardiac arrest and anoxic brain injury
A sudden cardiac arrest on the premises of the Malibu Lighthouse Treatment facility led to the catastrophic medical event that changed Rae's life.. Paramedics reportedly performed CPR for 30 to 40 minutes before her heartbeat was finally restored. This prolonged period of oxygen deprivation resulted in an anoxic brain injury, leaving Rae in a permanent vegetative state where she can only occasionally open her eyes or grunt.
A career spanning 700 films and Penthouse honors
Before her medical crisis, Adria Rae was a prominent and highly successful figure within the adult entertainment industry. she appeared in more than 700 adult films and earned several AVN Awards, which are often described as the industry's equivalent of the Oscars . Her career trajectory had even begun to shift toward mainstream acting in 2022 , following her recognition as a Penthouse Pet of the Month in 2019.
The mystery of the clean toxicology report
Several critical details regarding the incident at the Malibu facility remain unverified and continue to raise questions. While the lawsuit highlights the rapid decline of Rae's health, the Malibu Lighthouse Treatment facility has denied any wrongdoing and has not admitted any liability as part of the settlement. Furthermore, an early toxicology report found no drugs in Rae's system at the time of her cardiac arrest, leaving the exact cause of the arrest a mystery.
