A $50 billion pivot toward nuclear campuses
The Trump administration is shifting its energy strategy toward a decentralized model to help quadruple United States nuclear power capacity by the year 2050. According to documents reviewed by Politico, the plan involves moving away from the single-site repository model in favor of partnering with states that are willing to host radioactive material.
These proposed "innovation campuses" represent a massive economic play designed to revitalize the domestic nuclear fuel cycle. The Department of Energy stated that these sites could attract up to $50 billion in capital investment, generate roughly $10 billion in state and local tax revenue, and create nearly 25,000 jobs per campus. Beyond waste storage, these sprawling facilities could include uranium enrichment, spent-fuel recycling, and even energy-hungry data centers.
Tennessee, Utah, and three others enter the race
Five specific states have already emerged as frontrunners in the Department of Energy's search for new nuclear hubs. Following a selection process involving 28 applications from 26 different states, the agency has identified Tennessee, Utah, Louisiana, Idaho, and Oklahoma as the finalists. The Department of Energy intends to ultimately pursue projects in up to three of these five locations.
Utah has already proposed a specific site for its campus in Tooele County, where operations could range from fuel production to spent-fuel reprocessing . However, the proposal has already met with local scrutiny, as environmental groups have raised concerns regarding the potential site's proximity to the Great Salt Lake.
The 1987 legal hurdle for Yucca Mountain
This new proposal seeks to bypass the historrical and political failures that have paralyzd the Yucca Mountain project for decades. in 1987, Congress designated the site, located roughly 100 miles northwest of Las Vegas, as the nation's only permanent nuclear waste repository. However, the project was defunded during the Obama administration following intense opposition from Nevada officials, tribal groups, and local residents concerned about groundwater contamination and seismic risks.
Despite being the only authorized permanent repository under federal law, Yucca Mountain has never actually received nuclear waste because its licensing process was never completed. Currently, the United States is forced to manage approximately 105,000 tons of nuclear waste through decentralized methods, including water pools,underground tanks, and heavy-duty dry casks.
Can campuses replace a mined geological repository?
The administration's plan leaves several critical questions unanswered. First, it remains unclear how the Trump administration will convince Congress to rewrite the 1987 law that currently madnates Yucca Mountain as the only permanent site.
