Canada's Emergency Rooms in Crisis: Wait Times Soar
Across Canada, emergency rooms are grappling with a growing crisis characterized by lengthy wait times, overcrowded conditions, and a shortage of available beds. Reports from hospitals in Ontario and New Brunswick paint a concerning picture of a healthcare system under immense strain.
Sunnybrook ER Faces Critical Bed Shortages
At Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto, one of Canada’s largest trauma centres, 31 patients were recently admitted but remained in the emergency department due to a lack of available beds – roughly half of the ER’s total patient load. Dr. Justin Hall, Chief of Emergency Medicine at Sunnybrook, reported that one patient waited 36 hours for a bed. The median length of stay at Sunnybrook last year was 8 hours and 13 minutes, the highest in Ontario. This “bed block” is a major contributor to the delays.
AI Technology Deployed to Speed Up Patient Assessment
Sunnybrook is attempting to leverage technology, including artificial intelligence, to expedite patient assessment. An AI-powered app assists Dr. Hall by listening to patient interactions and summarizing medical history and potential treatment plans. While helpful, this technology doesn’t address the underlying issue of bed availability.
New Brunswick Audit Reveals Systemic Failures
A recent audit by New Brunswick’s Auditor General found that two-thirds of emergency room visitors are not being seen within a timely manner. The Department of Health lacks a comprehensive strategy to improve wait times. The audit revealed that only one-third of patients are seen by a physician within the appropriate timeframe, and even those with urgent needs don’t always receive immediate attention.
Lack of Strategic Planning & Funding Concerns
The New Brunswick audit also criticized the province’s five-year health plan for lacking a specific strategy to address ER delays. Furthermore, the Department of Health is not adequately overseeing regional health authorities and won’t implement a required accountability framework until 2025. Dr. Hall also highlighted funding issues in Ontario, where hospital funding is based on patient volume and triage level, not the complexity of cases. Sunnybrook is relying on private donor funds to add extra physician coverage.
Health PEI Reports Overcapacity Issues
Health PEI also reports that hospitals on Prince Edward Island are over capacity, with patients awaiting placement in long-term care facilities contributing to the congestion.
