Olivia Sawicz, a Grade 8 student at Marymount Academy, has achieved remarkable success by winning the Royal Canadian Legion Public Speaking Contest four times.
Provincial Competition Bound
Her latest victory at the District H & K level secures her a place in the provincial competition, taking place on May 2nd in Napanee, Ontario. The contest is a key component of the Legion’s Youth and Education Program.
“That Doesn’t Affect Me”
Sawicz’s winning speech, titled “That Doesn’t Affect Me,” explores the critical importance of taking responsibility for issues that may initially seem unrelated to one’s own life. She argues that ignoring seemingly distant problems can ultimately impact everyone.
A Journey of Growth
Olivia’s involvement in public speaking began with encouragement from a teacher. She viewed the contest as a valuable opportunity to improve her presentation skills and represent both Marymount Academy and the local Legion, Branch 76.
Initially nervous about public speaking, Sawicz has steadily gained confidence with each competition. She notes a significant improvement in her presentation abilities, even in regular classroom settings.
Preparation and Dedication
Sawicz prepares for each competition through a dedicated routine. This includes daily practice, repeated recitation of her speech, and studying videos of accomplished speakers.
School Pride and Support
Marymount Academy Principal Stephanie Venturi expressed immense pride in Sawicz’s accomplishments. Venturi highlighted Olivia’s ability to connect with her audience and inspire her peers.
Sawicz consistently demonstrates her school spirit by wearing her school uniform during competitions. This act showcases her strong character and dedication to Marymount Academy.
The school community is fully supporting Sawicz as she prepares for the provincial competition, recognizing the value of perseverance and effective communication.
