A Grade 4 class from Greenwood Public School experienced a remarkable field trip this morning, enjoying a final, unexpected opportunity to go cross-country skiing in May.
Unusual Conditions Enable Late-Season Skiing
Teacher Shane Dunne, an avid cross-country skier, stated that a May skiing excursion had never been possible in his years leading students to Hiawatha Highlands – until now. The unusually persistent snow cover, a result of substantial winter snowfall, made this unique experience a reality.
Grant Funding Supports Outdoor Education
Dunne secured an outdoor education grant from the Algoma District School Board, allowing the class weekly visits to Hiawatha Highlands throughout the winter. This consistent access to the trails was crucial in developing the students’ skills and fostering a love for the outdoors.
Consistent Trail Access and Skill Development
The students completed over a dozen trips to Hiawatha Highlands this year, participating in both cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Initially, many students struggled with basic skills like putting on equipment and recovering from falls.
However, by the end of the winter, they were confidently completing runs of 3, 5, and even 6.5 kilometers. Dunne noted the students’ notable progression and increased confidence throughout the season.
More Than Just a Ski Trip
The weekly trips were designed to provide a memorable outdoor education experience, instilling a connection with nature and a sense of accomplishment. Students developed teamwork skills, learned perseverance, and gained a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
Student Reactions
Olivia Valotaire, a Grade 4 student, expressed missing the snow despite the warmer weather, highlighting her fondness for the winter season. She particularly enjoyed using ski poles for propulsion.
Classmate Ahri O’Hara simply appreciated the absence of bugs, a common springtime annoyance. Dunne undertook a solo ski run to assess safety before bringing the students to the trails, finding the snow soft and the volume exceptional for this time of year.
