H-E-B has announced the 68 finalists for its 2026 Excellence in Education Awards, a statewide program recognizing outstanding contributions to Texas public education. The competition will award nearly half a million dollars to deserving professionals and school districts.

Recognizing Texas Educators

This year’s finalists include 50 exceptional teachers, counselors, and principals. Additionally, five exemplary early childhood facilities, five outstanding public school boards, and eight high-performing school districts are also in contention for the awards.

Initial Awards Distributed

H-E-B officials conducted surprise visits across Texas, presenting initial checks totaling $120,000 to the finalists. These funds are intended to immediately support their work and enhance educational resources.

Award Amounts for Finalists

Teacher finalists received a $1,000 personal award and a $1,000 grant for their schools. Counselors and principals were awarded $1,000 individually, with their schools receiving $1,500 and $2,500 grants, respectively. Early childhood centers, school boards, and district finalists each received $5,000.

Final Judging and Awards Ceremony

The finalists will now proceed to the final round of judging. The awards ceremony will take place on May 3 at the Marriott Marquis Houston.

Significant Cash Prizes to be Awarded

H-E-B will distribute an additional $480,000 in cash prizes and grants during the ceremony, bringing the total financial commitment to nearly $500,000. The Lifetime Achievement Award will grant $25,000 to a winning teacher and a matching $25,000 grant to their school.

Winning large school districts will receive $100,000, while winning small districts will be awarded $50,000. Since 2002, H-E-B has invested nearly $15 million in Texas education through this initiative. Nominations for the 2027 awards are currently open until September 30, 2026, on the program’s official website.
