A nationwide initiative, the Freedom 250 American Heroes Student Art Contest, has been launched to engage students in a creative exploration of American history.
Contest Overview
Students in grades 3-12 across all 50 states and U.S. territories are eligible to participate. The contest encourages young artists to honor individuals who have significantly contributed to the nation’s development over the past 250 years.
America 250 Celebrations
This contest is part of the broader America 250 celebrations, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States. Other participating organizations include the U.S. Postal Service, Canadian National Railway Company, CPKC railway, Greyhound, and various commemorative product releases.
National Garden of American Heroes
The contest centers around the National Garden of American Heroes. Students will select a hero from this garden – a diverse collection of individuals who have shaped the American narrative.
Submission Requirements
Students must create an original, handmade two-dimensional artwork representing their chosen hero. A 200-word artist statement explaining the artwork and the hero’s significance is also required.
Submission Categories & Evaluation
Submissions will be divided into three categories based on age and skill level. A panel of artists and educators will evaluate submissions based on artistic excellence, originality, relevance to the theme, and the clarity of the artist statement.
Prizes and Recognition
168 first-place winners – one from each category in each state and territory – will receive a travel and lodging allowance to Washington, D.C. They will attend a student art exhibition and award ceremony at the Great American State Fair.
Interested students can find detailed information and submission guidelines on the official Freedom 250 Student Art Contest website.
