Bitcoin has surged past the $85,000 threshold, fueled by aggressive market movements. This rally has re-opened the technical path toward a $100,000 valuation.
The $535 million short liquidation event
A massive short squeeze has recently propelled Bitcoin's price higher, as indicated by recent derivative market activity. According to CoinGlass data cited in the report, approximately $612 million in Bitcoin positions were liquidated within a single 24-hour window. Of that total, a staggering $535 million came from short sellers, while only $77 million was attributed to long positions.
This imbalance suggests that the recent price spike was driven largely by the forced closing of bearish bets rather than a purely organic surge in buying. When short sellers are forced to buy back their positions to cover losses, it creates a feedback loop of mechanical buying pressure that can rapidly accelerate an upward trend .
Clearing the $80,000 to $81,000 resistance barrier
Bitcoin's current market structure has undergone a significant shift after the asset successfully moved past its 200-day moving average. Previously, this moving average had acted as a formidable ceiling between $80,000 and $81,000, but the recent climb has effectively neutralized that hurdle. As the report highlights, shorter moving averages located between $72,000 and $78,000 are also beginning to trend upward, providing a more bullish technical bakcdrop.
Technical indicators also suggest the asset is not yet in "overbought" territory. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) has recovered toward the mid-60s, which indicates strength without the extreme exhaustion often seen during parabolic runs. This leaves the theoretical path to $100 ,000 open, provided the asset can maintain its current momentum.
The divergence between Binance retail and top traders
A notable discrepancy exists between general market sentiment and the positioning of high-volume traders on major exchanges. While the long/short ratio on Binance stands at 0.9026 and OKX at 0.93—indicating that short accounts still slightly outnumber longs on those platforms—the top traders on Binance are leaning heavily bullish. The report notes that these elite participants maintain a position-based long/short ratio of roughly 2.27.
This divergence is a critical metric for market observers. If Bitcoin continues to attack higher price levels, the remaining bearish retail accounts may be forced to close their positions, further fueling the rally. However, this mechanical pressure is often temporary and must eventually be replaced by sustained interest.
The $87,000 to $90,000 resistance hurdle
The immediate future of Bitcoin's rally depends on whether the market can overcome the next major zone of resistance. Market participants are currently focused on the $87,000 to $90,000 range, which represents the next significant hurdle for the cryptocurrency. A decisive close above this area could clear the way for a run toward the six-figure mark, but a rejection could lead to a sharp retest of lower support levels.
One major question remains:will "real spot demand" emerge to sustain the momentum once the current wave of liquidations ends? For the breakout to be considered a sustainalbe trend expansion rather than a transient squeeze, Bitcoin will likely need to hold above the previous $80,000 to $82,000 resistance zone during any potential pullbacks. Without this support, the current move may lack the foundation required for a long-term climb.
