Woman Sentenced to Life for Sister’s Murder

Nancy Pexton, aged 70, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 22 years for the murder of her sister, Jennifer Abbott Dauward, a 69-year-old film director. The sentencing took place at the Old Bailey following a trial that revealed a history of jealousy and animosity between the two sisters.

Motivated by Jealousy and Greed

The court heard that Pexton harbored deep-seated jealousy towards her more successful sibling. This culminated in a violent attack where she stabbed Ms. Abbott in the neck at her Camden, north London flat. Following the attack, Pexton stole her sister’s Rolex watch.

A History of Volatility

Evidence presented during the trial showed a long-standing, volatile relationship between the sisters. Ms. Abbott had previously expressed fears for her safety to her nephew, stating that Pexton was “capable of anything.”

Disturbing Messages and the Timeline of Events

Pexton had sent messages hinting at her murderous intentions, referring to her sister as “Satan” and proclaiming “Karma is coming for you.” On June 10th last year, Pexton visited Ms. Abbott’s flat and left an hour later. She then called her GP, claiming an overdose and was admitted to hospital.

Discovery of the Crime

A concerned neighbor, noticing the absence of barking from Ms. Abbott’s corgi, Prince, forced entry into the flat on June 13th. They discovered Ms. Abbott’s body partially naked, with gaffer tape covering her mouth and a severe slash wound to her neck.

The Corgi and the Stolen Rolex

Firefighters rescued Prince, who had been locked in a bathroom for three days. Police recovered the stolen Rolex watch from Pexton’s bag while she was in hospital. Pexton claimed she was asked to “look after” the watch, but the prosecution argued Ms. Abbott would never willingly part with it.

Family Testimony and the Victim’s Background

Ms. Abbott’s son, Brad Carlson, testified about the “bubbling” resentment between his mother and aunt. Ms. Abbott, also known as Sarah Steinberg, was a respected film director, known for the documentary ‘War Of The Gods’.

Sentencing and Judge’s Remarks

Judge Anuja Dhir KC described Pexton’s actions as “callous and cruel.” While premeditation couldn’t be definitively proven, the evidence demonstrated a deeply troubled relationship and Pexton’s deliberate act of violence. Pexton denied murder and attempted to blame a local drug dealer, but the jury found her guilty.
