Instead of completing the trip to her campus, the 18-year-old allegedly diverted the vehicle to his parents' residence in Vail, Arizona. according to the report,Lopez then forced the teenager into a tent, which was eventually moved deeper into the desert to ensure she remained out of sight from his family members.

During the months of captivity, the victim was allegedly denied access to a telephone and prevented from attending her classes. The report states that Lopez only permitted her to leave the tent briefly to use the bathroom or to enter his bedroom, often while she had to hide from his parents to avoid detection.
