A second man has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the 2023 shooting death of Mohamed Ahmed, brother of acclaimed Toronto poet Mustafa Ahmed. Mohamed Abdullahi, 34, of Toronto, was apprehended following a joint operation between Toronto and Belleville police.
Investigation Timeline and Initial Findings
The initial incident occurred in July 2023, when Mohamed Ahmed was found with a gunshot wound inside a vehicle near Sherbourne and Shuter streets in Toronto. Despite receiving immediate medical attention, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation has been ongoing since then, with authorities diligently working to gather evidence.
Additional Charges and Arrests
Abdullahi’s arrest wasn’t solely related to the murder charge. Belleville police, executing a search warrant, also arrested two other men alongside Abdullahi. All three individuals are facing additional charges related to drug trafficking and obstruction of justice.
Drug and Obstruction Offenses
The three men are accused of possessing a Schedule 1 substance – cocaine – for the purpose of trafficking, possessing proceeds of crime under $5,000, and obstructing police officers during the execution of their duties. This suggests a potentially wider criminal network is involved.
Court Appearances and Previous Arrest
Abdullahi was scheduled to appear in a Toronto court on Thursday to address the first-degree murder charge. The other two individuals will face charges related to the drug and obstruction offenses in Belleville. This development follows a previous arrest in November 2025, when Yasir Mohamed, 29, was also charged with first-degree murder in connection with Ahmed’s death.
Charges Against Yasir Mohamed
Yasir Mohamed faces a comprehensive list of charges, including pointing a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, assault with a weapon, possession of a firearm while under a prohibition order, and two counts of failing to comply with recognizance conditions.
Ongoing Investigation and Community Impact
The investigation remains active, and Toronto police are continuing to pursue all available leads. The case sparked significant grief within the Toronto arts community, given Mustafa Ahmed’s prominence as a poet and musician. This latest development represents a significant step towards justice for the victim and his family.
