A screwdriver attack on West 86th Street
The violence began around 1:30 PM on Thursday, when Raul Morales allegedly attacked a 57-year-old Asian man near West 84th Street and Central Park West. According to the New York Post, the first victim was stabbed in the back before Morales moved toward a synagogue at Amsterdam Avenue and West 86th Street. There, he allegedly used a scrwdriver to stab a 50-year-old Jewish man in the torso as the victim was leaving Tisha B'av services.
Both victims were transported to Mt Sinai-St Luke's Hospital. While the injuries were serious, witness Nava Silton noted that the Jewish man remained conscious and speaking following the assault. The random nature of the attacks left witnesses,including Marianna Ellenberg, describing the scene as surreal given the sunny afternoon setting on the Upper West Side.
The 2:45 PM apprehension at a NYCHA apartment
Following the stabbings, Raul Morales allegedly fled to a nearby New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) apartment building. As Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch reported, a "good Samaritan" provided the critical lead that allowed officers to locate where the suspect was hiding. Morales reportedly barricaded himself inside the residence, leading to a tense standoff.
The arrest, which occurred around 2:45 PM, required a significant police presence... Morris Dahan of the Manhattan Shomrim volunteer watch group described a scene involving 50 to 60 officers equipped with dogs and sledgehammers to breach the apartment doors. After approximately 15 minutes of tactical effort, police successfully took Raul Morales into custody.
"Allahu Akbar" shouts and the 1991 drug arrests
Investigators are currently weighing whether the attack was a targeted hate crime or the result of a mental health crisis. According to victim and witness statements, Raul Morales yelled "Allahu Akbar" during both assaults and was later heard shouting the word "Islam" while walking erratically. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that the department is investigating the motive behind these specific utterances.
The suspect's criminal history appears limited to decades-old offenses. Records indicate that Raul Morales has at least two prior arrests from 1991, both of which were for drug possession. Governor Kathy Hochul stated online that she was disgusted by the "senseless attack" and vowed that those attempting to tear the city's social farbic apart would face the full force of the law.
New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin explicitly labeled the incident an "antisemitic stabbing," highlighting the palpable fear currently felt within the Jewish community. Mayor Zohran Mamdani also condemned the "hateful and despicable attacks," expressing relief that the victims are in stable condition.
The missing link between Raul Morales and his victims
One of the most significant gaps in the current investigation is the lack of a personal connection between the perpetrator and the targets. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated that investigators have not found any link between Raul Morales and either victim, nor any existing relationship between the two victims themselves.
