South Carolina Couple Faces Child Abuse Allegations

A pastor and his wife in South Carolina have been arrested following allegations of abuse against a foster child in their care. The couple, Rodney Gibson and Kawiana Young, are facing multiple charges, and authorities are investigating the possibility of further victims.

Details of the Arrests and Charges

Rodney Gibson, 50, and Kawiana Young, also 50, were apprehended on April 1st by the Richland County Sheriff’s Department. Gibson is charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct, second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor, unlawful conduct toward a minor, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Young faces a charge of unlawful conduct with a minor.

Victim's Account

The charges stem from allegations made by a victim who reported enduring abuse while living in the couple’s home. The victim came forward last month, detailing alleged sexual abuse beginning at age 15 and continuing until they aged out of the foster care system. Investigators learned a minor was residing with Gibson and Young at the time of the alleged abuse.

Controversial Court Decision & Re-arrest

The victim initially was placed in emergency protective custody, but a family court judge ordered the minor to be returned to Gibson and Young’s home during an emergency hearing on March 20th. Following a further investigation and the collection of additional evidence, arrest warrants were issued. Gibson and Young were released on bond on April 2nd, and the minor was again placed in protective custody.

Foster Care License & Discrepancies

The South Carolina Department of Social Services (DSS) is also involved in the investigation. Kawiana Young held a foster parent license from June 2021 to June 2025, fostering six children during that period. She voluntarily relinquished her license.

Undisclosed Information

DSS officials discovered Young failed to disclose that Gibson resided at the home, and his name was not on the foster care license. Young also reportedly stated she was not in a relationship and did not disclose her marriage.

Ongoing Investigation and Call for Information

The DSS is cooperating with the ongoing investigation, reaffirming its commitment to the safety of foster children. Authorities are concerned there may be additional victims and are urging anyone with information to come forward. The case underscores the importance of robust oversight and background checks within the foster care system.
