On September 8, a woman in Santa Ana allegedly used food to lure a pitbull mix puppy under a minivan before driving over it. The Santa Ana Police Department is currently seeking the driver's identity following the incident on West Park Lane.
The 15-second cruelty on West Park Lane
The surveillance footage, released by the Santa Ana Police Department, depicts a chilling sequence of events captured by a camera at a residence across the steet from the crime scene. According to the police, a woman arrived in a minivan, placed the puppy on the roadway, and then used food to lure the animal directly under the driver's side of the vehicle. As the pitbull mix moved toward the food, the vehicle advanced, and the rear driver's side tire rolled over the animal.
The footage shows that the driver did not immediately flee after the impact. Instead, the driver kept the minivan stationary on top of the puppy for approximately 15 seconds before finally driving away. The animal was later found in the street across from 926 W. Park Ln.
A blue or green Honda Odyssey fleeing north
Authorities have identified the vehicle involved in the attack as an older model Honda Odyssey.. The minivan appeared to be either green or blue at the time of the incident. As reported by authorities, the Odyssey was seen fleeing the scene by heading north on Lowell Street.
Investigators are currently asking the public for any information that might help identify the driver or the specific vehicle used in the crime. Because the vehicle is an older model, police are looking for any witnesses who may have seen the Honda Odyssey in the West Park Lane area during the morning of September 8.
Weeks of canvassing and a resident's tip
The investigation into the puppy's death gained momentum after a local resident reported seeing the minivan parked nearby. This tip suggested the driver had intentionally harmed the animal, prompting a multi-week effort by Santa Ana police and animal services officials to canvass the surrounding neighborhood. After weeks of searching for evidence, officers eventually located footage from a residence across the street that corroborated the resident's account of the intentional act.
The missing license plate and the misdemeanor debate
Despite the graphic video evidence, several critical pieces of information remain unknown to investigators. Most notably, the surveillance footae did not allow officers to capture a license plate, and the woman involved has not yet been identified. No arrests have been made as of Wednesday.
The lack of immediate identification has left the local community in a state of fury. One resident described the act as "beyond evil and disgusting," callinng for strict punishment at future court hearings. However, there is significant skepticism regarding the legal consequences the driver might face. Some community members expressed doubt that the driver would face felony charges, fearing the act might only be prosecuted as a misdemeanor that results in mere probation. Anyone with information is asked to call 714-245-8378.
