Samuel Corner, an activist with Palestine Action, has been found guilty of inflicting grievous bodily harm on a police officer during a raid on a UK facility belonging to Israeli-based defense company Elbit Systems.
Conviction Details
The conviction followed a retrial at Woolwich Crown Court. While the jury acquitted Corner of grievous bodily harm with intent, he was convicted by a majority vote of 11 to one of inflicting grievous bodily harm. The incident took place on August 6, 2024.
The Raid on Elbit Systems
Four activists – Samuel Corner, Charlotte Head, Leona Kamio, and Fatema Rajwani – participated in a meticulously planned raid on the Bristol factory. They utilized a repurposed prison van as a ‘battering ram’ to breach security. The group then proceeded to destroy equipment, including computers and drones, causing an estimated £1 million in damage.
Sergeant Evans' Testimony
Sergeant Kate Evans testified that she feared paralysis after being struck by Corner, believing her spine could have been shattered. She was unable to return to work for three months and continues to experience back pain more than 20 months after the attack.
Corner's Defense
Corner claimed he acted after hearing screams and fearing security guards were injuring someone. He stated he struck the officer after being sprayed with Pava spray without warning. He admitted his actions were “over the top” had he considered the consequences, acknowledging Sergeant Evans posed no threat to him.
Additional Convictions and Acquittals
Charlotte Head, who drove the prison van, and Leona Kamio and Fatema Rajwani were also found guilty of criminal damage. Zoe Rogers and Jordan Devlin were acquitted of the same charge.
Background Information
Corner, a former Oxford University student, was described by his grandfather as a “gentle soul” deeply concerned about injustice. Security footage showed Sergeant Evans warning the defendants they were committing criminal damage. The prosecutor stated the raid aimed to cause maximum damage and gather information about the company.
