Ogden Murder Sentencing Postponed
A Utah family’s search for justice experienced a setback on Monday when the sentencing of Ana Maria Zaragoza, accused of murdering Nakeena Youngman, was unexpectedly delayed. The family, prepared for a sense of closure, now faces an additional period of waiting.
Heartbreak and Loss
The delay has intensified the grief of Youngman’s loved ones. Shiloh Alires, Youngman’s son-in-law, described her as a source of unwavering support: “Anything that a son-in-law could ask for, really, she was a protector, she was always there for me whenever I needed her.” He added, “She was the mom I never had and I wished for.”
A Cherished Life Remembered
Youngman was remembered as a beloved mother, aunt, grandma, cousin, and friend. Her tragic death occurred in April 2025, when she was found with a gunshot wound on 800 North in Ogden and later died at the hospital. The family had hoped the sentencing would offer some relief, especially for the younger family members.
Courtroom Confusion and System Failure
Ana Maria Zaragoza, 38, was scheduled to be sentenced on Monday for Youngman’s murder, but the proceedings were halted when she was not brought to court. Judge Craig Hall acknowledged the issue, stating, “We apologize for not being able to proceed. We just can’t proceed without the defendant being here.”
Communication Breakdown
The reason for Zaragoza’s absence was a miscommunication between the court and the sheriff’s offices responsible for her transport. An investigation by FOX 13 News revealed that neither the Davis County Sheriff’s Office nor the Weber County Sheriff’s Office received notification of the hearing from the court.
Family's Frustration and Renewed Wait
Stephanie Wilkinson, a longtime friend of the family, expressed her frustration, stating, “The family has had to emotionally and mentally prepare for this. We have been preparing for this for 13 months…just waiting for the sentencing to be today.” She described the situation as “absolutely unacceptable,” particularly given the emotional toll on the children.
The sentencing has been rescheduled for Friday, May 15, at 1:30 p.m. Alires expressed his disappointment, saying, “We’re processing throughout the weeks, that we’d have justice and stuff, and today, now, they can’t bring her here.” He described the situation as “quite bugged, honestly, quite frustrated.” The family now faces an extended wait, including through Mother’s Day, as they continue to seek justice for Nakeena Youngman.
