Karl Cronin, a notorious fraudster sought by the Metropolitan Police, died after a fall from a window in Chelsea, west London. The incident occurred in the early hours of Easter Monday along King’s Road, resulting in fatal injuries.
Property Scam and Previous Investigations
Cronin was the central figure in a substantial property scam, estimated to have defrauded victims of over £5 million. He primarily targeted landlords and property owners in the Fulham and Chelsea areas during the early 2000s.
He was previously featured on the BBC’s Crimewatch program in 2008 as police attempted to locate him regarding his involvement in fraudulent activities. The circumstances surrounding his return to London were unclear, as he had been evading authorities for a considerable period.
Conflicting Accounts of Cronin’s Character
Those who knew Cronin offered conflicting perspectives on his character. One acquaintance described him as someone who “destroyed many, many lives” and operated with a “ruthless streak,” prioritizing wealth and a lavish lifestyle.
Another friend portrayed him as a “loveable rogue,” similar to a character like Arthur Daley, highlighting his charisma and enjoyment of life. However, even this individual acknowledged the significant damage Cronin inflicted on others.
Involvement in the 2017 Fraud Case
Cronin’s influence extended to a 2017 case that led to the imprisonment of model Laylah de Cruz and her mother, Dianne Moorcroft, for defrauding a 91-year-old heiress. His financial allure was a key factor in their scheme.
The scheme involved Moorcroft assuming the identity of Margaret Gwenllian Richards, obtaining a passport and residency permit under a false name. This allowed them to secure a £1.2 million loan against a Kensington property, transferring the funds to Dubai and withdrawing them in cash.
De Cruz was motivated by Cronin’s extravagant lifestyle, including his wealth, cars, and jewelry. While Cronin did not face trial due to his fugitive status, the prosecution acknowledged his central role.
Both women were convicted of conspiracy to commit fraud and sentenced to five years in prison.
Ongoing Investigation and Speculation
Authorities currently do not suspect foul play in Cronin’s death, but an investigation is ongoing. Some close to him dismiss the possibility of suicide, suggesting he had numerous enemies.
Neighbors have expressed curiosity and a desire to uncover the truth behind his death. The case raises questions about the extent of Cronin’s network and potential unresolved issues that may have contributed to his demise.
