Karl Cronin, a notorious fraudster long sought by the Metropolitan Police, has died after a fall from a window in Chelsea, west London. The incident occurred in the early hours of Easter Monday along the King's Road, resulting in fatal injuries.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have stated they do not suspect foul play, believing Cronin fell from a second-story window. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death is currently ongoing.
Multi-Million Pound Property Scam
Cronin was the central figure in a substantial property scam estimated to have defrauded victims of over £5 million. He primarily targeted landlords and property owners in the Fulham and Chelsea areas during the early 2000s.
Crimewatch Appearance and Evading Authorities
He had previously been featured on the BBC's Crimewatch program in 2008, as police attempted to locate and question him regarding his fraudulent activities. The circumstances surrounding his return to London remain unclear, as he had been evading authorities for a considerable period.
Conflicting Accounts of Cronin's Character
Those who knew Cronin offered conflicting accounts of his character. One acquaintance described him as someone who 'destroyed many, many lives' and operated with a 'ruthless streak,' prioritizing money and a lavish lifestyle.
Another friend portrayed him as a 'loveable rogue,' akin to a character like Arthur Daley, emphasizing his charisma and enjoyment of life. However, even this individual acknowledged the significant damage Cronin inflicted on others.
Connection to 2017 Fraud Case
Cronin’s involvement extended beyond direct fraud, as he was implicated in a 2017 case that led to the imprisonment of model Laylah de Cruz and her mother, Dianne Moorcroft, for defrauding a 91-year-old heiress.
The scheme involved Moorcroft assuming the identity of the elderly property owner, Margaret Gwenllian Richards, obtaining a passport and residency permit under a false name. This allowed them to secure a £1.2 million loan against a Kensington property, transferring the funds to Dubai.
De Cruz was motivated by Cronin’s extravagant lifestyle, including his wealth, cars, and jewelry. While Cronin himself did not face trial due to his fugitive status, the prosecution acknowledged his central role in the scheme.
De Cruz received a five-year prison sentence, and Moorcroft was also sentenced to five years for conspiracy to commit fraud.
Speculation Surrounding His Death
Some who knew him dismiss the possibility of suicide, suggesting he had numerous enemies. Neighbors have expressed curiosity and a desire to learn more about the events leading up to his death.
