A police standoff in Bridgewater, New Jersey, ended in an arrest after a suspect refused to surrender for more than a day, leaving local residents under a shelter-in-place order for over 24 hours.
The suspect, identified as 25-year-old Eric Thorogood, was allegedly armed with two firearms and refused to leave his residence or disarm, leading to a prolonged confrontation with law enforcement.
The Start of the Confrontation
The incident began on Thursday evening when the Bridgewater Police Department received a 911 call shortly before 7:45 p.m. The call reported that Thorogood was armed with two guns.
Officers responded to Thorogood's home on Hill Lane but were unable to establish contact with him. By approximately 10 p.m. Thursday, the Somerset County SWAT team, SWAT Tactical Medics, and the Crisis-Negotiations Team were deployed to the scene.
Community Impact and Negotiations
Throughout Thursday night and the entirety of Friday, crisis negotiators and police officers attempted to persuade Thorogood to surrender. However, the suspect continued to refuse to leave the home or put down his weapons.
To ensure public safety, authorities evacuated several nearby homes. Other residents in the immediate neighborhood were ordered to shelter in place for the duration of the event.
The Resolution and Arrest
The standoff concluded around 6 a.m. on Saturday when SWAT team members entered the residence. Upon entry, officers found Thorogood armed with a pistol and a rifle.
During the encounter, Thorogood allegedly fired three shots, resulting in a self-inflicted wound to his leg. Officials confirmed that no law enforcement officers were injured and that police did not return fire.
SWAT team members provided immediate medical assistance to Thorogood before transporting him to a local hospital for treatment.
Legal Charges and Current Status
The shelter-in-place order for the neighborhood was officially lifted at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, bringing the total duration of the standoff to 34 hours.
Thorogood is now facing several charges, including aggravated assault and possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose. According to the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office, he will be transferred to the Somerset County Jail following his discharge from the hospital.
The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
