Giovana Lozano Hernandez, 27, has been sentenced to 70 months in federal prison for her role as the bookkeeper in a human smuggling operation linked to a faction of the Los Zetas cartel. A U.S. district judge in Laredo, Texas, handed down the sentence this week.
Criminal Operation and Scope
The organization was responsible for the illegal transport of over 1,900 migrants into Texas. Lozano Hernandez, who was residing in the U.S. without legal authorization, will be deported following her prison term. She had previously pleaded guilty to federal human smuggling charges in September 2025 as part of a plea agreement.
Her husband, Danny Nunez, identified as the leader of the smuggling organization, also pleaded guilty in 2025 and received a ten-year sentence. Federal agents began investigating the group in 2024 due to indications of their large-scale migrant smuggling activities.
Lozano Hernandez's Role
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the group actively brought migrants into Texas from Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas. Lozano Hernandez managed the financial records, meticulously tracking her husband’s finances, migrant details, and payment statuses.
She also maintained detailed records of the organization's expenses, including costs for transporting, housing, and feeding the smuggled migrants. Evidence presented by prosecutors linked the operation to a 2023 incident where 101 migrants were found trapped in a tractor-trailer.
Combating Transnational Crime
The case highlights ongoing efforts to combat human smuggling and hold those involved accountable. The Los Zetas cartel has a history of involvement in human trafficking and other illicit activities.
The sentencing of Lozano Hernandez and Nunez demonstrates federal authorities' commitment to dismantling such operations. The plea agreement facilitated an efficient resolution, allowing resources to be focused on other investigations.
Deportation following her prison sentence underscores the consequences for unlawful presence and criminal activity. The prosecution exemplifies efforts to secure the border and combat organized crime.
