A significant increase in residential burglaries across Los Angeles County has prompted a swift response from city officials and a rise in community-led security efforts.
Mayor Bass Orders Increased Police Presence
Mayor Karen Bass has directed the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) to increase patrols, particularly along Ventura Boulevard. This decision comes after a series of break-ins in neighborhoods like Sherman Oaks, Encino, and North Hollywood.
“The safety of every citizen remains our ultimate priority,” Mayor Bass stated. “We will continue to commit all available resources to deter potential intruders and ensure that families feel secure within their own residences.”
Recent Incident in Sherman Oaks
Early Tuesday morning, suspects attempted to break into a home on Noble Avenue in Sherman Oaks. They shattered a rear window around 1:30 a.m. but fled when homeowners were discovered to be present. Investigators are analyzing the incident to determine if it is connected to a larger criminal pattern.
History of Burglaries and LAPD Response
This recent spike, which began intensifying in mid-April, echoes similar trends seen in the San Fernando Valley in past years. Previous efforts in 2025, including air support, license plate readers, and increased patrols, proved insufficient to fully address the issue.
LAPD's Current Strategy
The LAPD Operations-Valley Bureau has implemented an “all-hands-on-deck” strategy. This includes high-visibility patrols, mobile license plate scanning technology, and inter-divisional task forces focused on apprehending suspects involved in high-value burglaries.
Community Response and Vigilance
Alongside the official response, residents are taking proactive steps to protect their neighborhoods. Community-led patrols are forming in areas like North Hollywood, Sylmar, Valley Village, and Toluca Lake.
Many residents are also investing in personal security measures, such as advanced home surveillance systems and reinforced entry points. Law enforcement continues to urge homeowners to remain vigilant, secure their homes, and maintain communication with neighbors.
