Welsh content creator Ben Phillips survived a terrifying armed robbery at a luxury rental in the Vallauris region of France this June. Five intruders breached the Villa Bleu property, stealing luxury items valued at up to £1.5 million while holding Phillips at gunpoint.

The £1.5 million heist at Villa Bleu

The financial scale of the theft at the Villa Bleu property reached an estimated total of £1.5 million, according to the report. While the intruders targeted high-end assets belonging to the villa's owners, the personal losses for Ben Phillips and his partner, Lowri Clark, were significant. The report states that the duo lost approximately £400,000 to £500,000 in stolen assets, specifically including several Rolex watches and various pieces of Louis Vuitton luggage.

This violent incident highlights a growing trend of high-profile digital creators being targeted during stays at luxury short-term rentals in the French Riviera. For influencers with massive global followings, such as Phillips, who boasts over 30 million followers, the visibility of their travels can inadvertently turn opulent holiday destinations into high-stakes targets for organized crime.

A jammed weapon and a desperate escape in Vallauris

The violent encounter began around 11:30 PM on June 2 while Phillips was alone at the residence. The attackers reportedly smashed through a bedroom door and held a firearm directly to Phillips' face. The situation reached a terrifying peak when a robber held a gun against Phillips' temple to ensure compliance, only for the weapon to jam at a critical moment.

Seizing the split second provided by the malfunctioning firearm, Phillips managed to knock the weapon from the attacker's hand and sprinted to a bathroom. He locked himself inside the room and began screaming for help,a desperate act of defiance that eventually forced the five intruders to abandon their attempt to breach the bathroom and flee the premises.

Who provided the intelligence for the Vallauris raid?

Several questions remain regarding how the attackers bypassed the security of the Vallauris estate. although the property featured a formidable four-meter-tall perimeter wall , the five intruders were able to scale it and enter the grounds undetected. It is currently unknown if the robbers had specific intelligence regarding Phillips' presence at the villa or if the security protocols of the £8 million Airbnb were insufficient to deter a coordinated group .

Five suspects detained by French authorities

French law enforcement responded to the crime scene with a massive deployment of approximately 50 armed officers and a specialized forensics unit. The subsequent investigation led to the arrest of five individuals: three men aged 26, 36, and 31, and two women aged 31 and 34. One suspect was apprehended by BRI 06 teams in Nice while attempting to sell stolen luxury goods to a second-hand high-end retailer.

All five suspects have been presented to the Grasse prosecutor's office and are currently being held in pre-trial detention. While the arrests mark a significant breakthrough, the investigation continues to determine the full extent of the criminal network involved in the raid.
