HIV Predator Sentenced to Life in Prison

Adam Hall, 43, has been sentenced to life in prison for deliberately infecting multiple sexual partners with HIV. He concealed his HIV status and engaged in unprotected sex, including rape, with seven victims ranging in age from 15 to their late 20s.

Details of the Case

Hall, a sex shop worker from Washington, Tyne and Wear, was found guilty of five counts of rape and seven counts of causing grievous bodily harm after a four-month trial at Newcastle Crown Court. The offenses occurred between 2016 and 2023.

Victims' Experiences

The victims discovered their HIV infection only after receiving their own diagnoses. One victim, who was 15 at the time of infection, described a devastating emotional impact, stating that “everything shattered” and “everything went numb” upon learning of the diagnosis.

Investigation and Evidence

The investigation was extensive, requiring 35,000 hours of police time, 450 statements, 1,600 documents, 670 exhibits, and testimony from 37 witnesses. Hall denied the charges, even suggesting some victims desired infection, but the jury found him guilty.

Disregard for Treatment

The court heard that Hall was aware of his transmittable viral load but continued to engage in risky sexual behavior. He disregarded the fact that an undetectable viral load prevents HIV transmission. He used dating app Grindr and operated within the Newcastle chem sex scene to meet victims across the North East, Manchester, and London.

Sentencing and Aftermath

Despite being diagnosed with HIV in 2010 and receiving repeated advice to adhere to medication, Hall failed to do so. He is only the second person in the UK to be convicted of intentional HIV transmission and will be placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life. The judge described Hall as “dangerous.”

Victims have expressed feelings of anger, betrayal, and stigmatization. The defense argued Hall expressed remorse, stating he felt “sick” at the thought of transmitting HIV, but maintained he did not do so intentionally.
