A family in Conisbrough, South Yorkshire, has been subjected to a terrifying campaign of harassment and vandalism following the death of their beloved dog, PJ.

Tragic Loss of Beloved Pet

The ordeal began on January 2nd when PJ, a 12-year-old Jackapoo, was fatally mauled by another dog in the family’s back garden. Aaron and Rebecca Thompson’s eldest daughter, Ellie, attempted to intervene, but PJ suffered horrific injuries, including broken legs, a ripped jaw, and multiple puncture wounds, ultimately requiring euthanasia.

Escalating Vandalism and Abuse

Following PJ’s death, the family experienced a series of abusive incidents culminating in two nights of targeted vandalism on March 24th and 25th. On the first night, a hooded individual attempted to break into vehicles parked outside their home. Aaron Thompson confronted the intruder while still undressed.

The following night, assailants returned, smashing front windows and repeatedly ramming into the family’s cars. The damage was extensive, rendering a BMW Z4, a BMW 1 series, and a BMW 3 series completely unrepairable. A Hyundai i10 also sustained damage.

Family's Emotional Distress

The Thompsons described the events as a “nightmare” that has left them “mentally destroyed.” They are struggling with sleeplessness and witnessing their children’s distress. Ellie now feels unsafe in her own home and has been experiencing panic attacks.

'Justice for PJ' Campaign and Police Response

Last month, the family launched a campaign called ‘Justice for PJ’ to raise awareness about the dog responsible for PJ’s death and express their dissatisfaction with the initial police response. South Yorkshire Police investigated the initial dog attack but determined there were no grounds to seize the animal.

Police Investigation and Restorative Justice

Inspector Steve Usher stated that seizing a dog is a serious decision reserved for cases where it poses a risk to people. The dog’s owner was advised of potential consequences and agreed to participate in restorative justice, including a Responsible Dog Ownership Course with the Blue Cross Charity, and implement measures to prevent further harm.

Despite these efforts, the Thompsons remain deeply affected by the ordeal, emphasizing the emotional toll it has taken on their family. They acknowledge the attacks have strengthened their bond but lament the constant fear and emotional pain they are experiencing. Police have stated there is currently no evidence linking the attacks on the Thompsons’ property to the previous dog incident.
