A 22-year-old man fled a moving vehicle during a police chase in Nottinghamshire after being caught speeding. Conrad Tonkinson admitted to dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, and driving without insurance and has been remanded in custody.
High-Speed Chase in Nottinghamshire
Conrad Tonkinson engaged in a dangerous pursuit with Nottinghamshire Police after initially being observed exceeding the speed limit in a residential area. The incident began on Tuesday afternoon when Tonkinson was clocked speeding in a 30mph zone.
Dramatic Escape Attempt
Police initiated a chase, tracking his blue Nissan Qashqai as he drove through Ollerton and Boughton, Nottinghamshire, at approximately 1:35 PM. As the vehicle approached a dead end on Bentinck Close, Tonkinson made the astonishing decision to eject himself from the moving car, estimated to be traveling at around 50mph.
Dashcam footage released by the police captures the dramatic sequence of events. Despite abandoning his vehicle, Tonkinson attempted to continue his escape on foot.
Apprehension and Charges
Officers from the Roads Policing Unit quickly pursued him on foot and apprehended Tonkinson after a brief chase. He subsequently admitted to dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, and driving without valid insurance.
The abandoned Nissan Qashqai crashed into a fence, causing damage to the property. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Police Condemnation and Praise
Detective Sergeant Paul Clark of Nottinghamshire Police condemned Tonkinson’s driving as ‘extremely poor’ and emphasized the significant risk he posed to others. He stated Tonkinson’s actions, particularly in a residential area, were deeply concerning.
DS Clark praised the professionalism and ‘superior driving skills’ of the Roads Policing Unit officers involved in the pursuit and apprehension, noting their swift response ensured no one was harmed.
Upcoming Sentencing
Tonkinson has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear for sentencing at Nottingham Crown Court on May 13th. This case serves as a reminder of the severe penalties associated with dangerous driving.
