Disturbing video footage has emerged from Leicester, England, depicting a confrontation involving individuals wearing Deliveroo branded clothing and the subsequent discarding of a knife.
Leicester Street Altercation
The incident, captured on video and shared on X (formerly Twitter), shows two individuals in black face masks and turquoise Deliveroo jackets involved in a physical altercation with two other men on Upperton Road. One of the individuals dropped a shopping bag from Lidl and retrieved a large knife.
Knife Disposal and Witness Accounts
The individual with the knife ran back towards his bicycle while a woman and two young children observed the scene. The second individual recovered the abandoned shopping bag. The first individual then threw the knife into nearby bushes before both individuals fled on their bicycles.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have been notified, and investigations are underway to determine the identities of those involved and the circumstances surrounding the incident. Leicestershire Police and Deliveroo are investigating whether the individuals were legitimate employees or were impersonating riders.
Recent Safety Concerns
This incident occurs amid increased scrutiny of delivery service vetting and safety protocols. Last month, Shafiullah Rasooli, an Afghan national, was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for sexually assaulting two women while working as a Deliveroo driver.
Rasooli's Conviction
Shafiullah Rasooli was convicted at Sevenoaks Magistrates’ Court on three counts of sexual assault. He exploited his position as a delivery driver to make inappropriate remarks, enter a woman’s property, and sexually assault her. He later returned to commit another offense and attempted to obtain the victim’s contact information.
Rasooli repeatedly contacted the first victim, causing further distress, and subsequently targeted another woman, making indecent comments and sexually assaulting her after inquiring about her relationship status. Law enforcement identified Rasooli through CCTV footage, order screenshots, and contact details provided to his victims.
Deliveroo's Response
Deliveroo stated they were “horrified” by Rasooli’s actions and terminated his rider account, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy towards harassment and assault. The company is cooperating fully with the police in the Leicester knife incident investigation.
Growing Pressure for Enhanced Security
The connection between these two incidents is prompting questions about security measures for delivery personnel and the potential for misuse of company branding. Deliveroo faces increasing pressure to demonstrate robust background checks and ongoing monitoring of its riders. The presence of children during the altercation adds to the concern for public safety.
