Colombian Police Disrupt Major Criminal Organization
Colombian authorities have successfully dismantled a major criminal organization, El Mesa, with the arrest of 23 individuals involved in homicides, drug trafficking, and other violent crimes. The operation was a coordinated effort between the National Police and the Office of the Attorney General.
Operation Targets Bogotá and Antioquia
The operation primarily targeted El Mesa’s activities in Bogotá, resulting in the seizure of illicit funds and weapons. El Mesa originated in Antioquia but had expanded its operations to the capital city, employing various tactics to maintain control and evade law enforcement.
Hitman's Arrest Goes Viral
The arrest of Nías, identified as the head of a hit squad, unexpectedly became a social media sensation. He was apprehended while wearing a Taylor Swift hoodie, sparking widespread commentary online.
Criminal Tactics and Distribution Networks
El Mesa utilized various tactics to distribute illegal substances, including posing as taxi drivers and renting short-term homes for storage. Distribution networks spanned neighborhoods like La Gaitana, Fontanar, and Villa Cindy, as well as public spaces like parking lots and nightclubs.
Financial Impact of the Operation
The operation significantly disrupted El Mesa’s financial operations, reportedly impacting their income by nearly 550 million Colombian pesos per month – approximately $135,000. These funds were allegedly used to procure weapons and support the group’s logistical expansion.
Key Figures Apprehended
Key figures within El Mesa, such as Alejo, accused of orchestrating homicides in Bogotá, and Tavo, responsible for planning attacks against unauthorized drug sellers, were also arrested. Nías, believed to be responsible for at least 50 homicides, began his criminal activities at age 13.
Evading Law Enforcement
Law enforcement officials noted that El Mesa members frequently relocated to evade detection. According to Coroner Elver Alfonso, members were moved to different regions when police investigations were suspected. Police Commander Giovanni Cristancho confirmed this tactic.
Bogotá Mayor Addresses Violence
Bogotá Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán stated that El Mesa members generated extreme violence and were linked to at least six homicides in the capital, including cases where bodies were abandoned in bags. Several members are suspected of involvement in additional killings both within and outside the city.
Charges and Ongoing Investigation
The arrested individuals face charges related to homicides, drug trafficking, forced disappearances, and illegal possession of firearms. This investigation highlights the challenges of combating organized crime and the importance of interagency collaboration.
