A Chicago police officer died and another was critically injured after a shooting at Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital on Saturday morning.
Tragic Shooting at Swedish Hospital
The incident occurred around 10:50 am as officers were transporting an individual to the hospital for a medical evaluation, according to Superintendent Larry Snelling. The suspect is currently in custody, and their identity has not yet been released.
Details of the Incident
Hospital officials stated the suspect underwent a metal detector scan upon arrival at the emergency department, a standard procedure. Despite this, the individual discharged a firearm at the officers before fleeing the hospital building.
Law enforcement officers maintained a constant escort of the suspect within the hospital premises. A subsequent pursuit led to the suspect’s apprehension. A weapon was recovered from the scene.
Investigation Underway
A thorough investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Investigators will focus on how the suspect retained a firearm despite the initial screening and if any procedural failures contributed to the incident.
City and Department Response
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson expressed his profound sadness and emphasized the city’s commitment to providing mental health support to the police department. Superintendent Snelling refrained from releasing specific details to ensure families are properly notified.
The deceased officer was 38 years old and had served with the department for 10 years. The injured officer is 57 years old and has served for 21 years. The city mourns the loss of the officer and hopes for the recovery of the injured officer.
