RCMP officers from Yukon and northern British Columbia are collaborating to locate a missing snowmobiler in the Haines Pass area. The search began after a group of three men went to recover a broken-down snowmobile near Haines Summit, along the Yukon border, on May 8.

Search Efforts Complicated by Extreme Weather

The missing individual was separated from his group around 4 p.m. on May 8. According to Cpl. Brett Urano, the conditions were severe, with heavy snow and strong winds creating zero visibility. The missing snowmobiler did not have essential survival gear, an in-reach device, or a functioning satellite phone.

Search efforts have been hampered by the challenging weather, including snow, fog, rain, and wind. Despite using snowmobiles and helicopters, the limited visibility windows have made the search difficult.

Community Support and Warnings

On May 10, the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun Chief and Council posted on Facebook, acknowledging that one of their citizens is missing in the Haines Summit area. They expressed their support for the RCMP and community members involved in the search efforts.

Cpl. Urano warned well-intentioned individuals against conducting their own searches, citing the extreme danger posed by the technical terrain, avalanche conditions, open crevices, and melting snow. He emphasized that such actions could divert police resources to additional rescues.

RCMP Advise Caution

RCMP officers are stationed along the Haines Highway and are advising individuals to consult with them before entering the area. The search continues amid the treacherous conditions.
