TORONTO – Several Canadian airlines are implementing surcharges on bookings as jet fuel prices continue to rise, according to a CBC News broadcast on Tuesday.
Air Canada Vacations is adding a $50 surcharge to all sunny destination packages, effective immediately. Porter Airlines has added a $40 fuel surcharge to VIP points bookings, and WestJet will apply a $60 surcharge to all companion voucher bookings starting Wednesday.
The price increases are attributed to the recent surge in jet fuel costs, which industry experts say is a direct result of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Airlines operate on tight margins, making fuel a significant expense.
Consumers expressed concern over the added costs. “It’s going to make it really difficult for a lot of people to travel,” one traveller told CBC News. Another stated, “I think it’s too much for everybody right now.”
While travel to sunny destinations is becoming more expensive, the broadcast noted that competition within Canada is currently keeping prices stable for transcontinental flights, such as those between Vancouver and Toronto.
Travel agents are advising customers to book vacations now, anticipating further surcharges in the future. Concerns were also raised about potential fuel rationing and grounded flights in Southeast Asian countries.
