Your Neighbourhood Credit Union (YNCU) is addressing a recent hacking incident involving Visa Debit cards, primarily affecting members in Sault Ste. Marie. The credit union is actively reimbursing affected customers and has implemented additional security measures to protect member accounts.
Branch Updates and Customer Support
The Bay Street branch temporarily closed on Saturday to address the security breach. It reopened on Monday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to provide direct assistance. The Trunk Road branch resumed normal operations on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. YNCU is prepared for increased call volume and is dedicating resources to assist all affected members.
Customer Experiences and Reports
Several YNCU customers shared their concerns on social media. Kim Liepa reported an unauthorized charge of nearly $600 from Health Setting LLC in Renton, WA. YNCU is taking these reports seriously and working to resolve the issue for all impacted members.
Police Involvement and Reimbursement Process
YNCU has informed customers that they do not need to report the incident to the police, as the credit union is directly handling reimbursements. The institution initiated the refund process on Saturday at 1 p.m., with processing continuing throughout the holiday weekend.
Incident Scope and Security Measures
YNCU officials confirmed the incident was contained to branches within Sault Ste. Marie. The credit union clarified that the fraud attempt targeted Visa Debit cards and did not affect core banking systems or online banking platforms. Additional protective measures have been implemented to prevent future occurrences.
