Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport has maintained its status as the premier mega airport for three years straight. According to the 2026 J.D. Power North America Airport Satisfaction Study, the Midwest hub outperformed major coastal competitors by scoring 684 points on a 1,000-point scale.

The Infrastructure Dividend in the 2026 Rankings

The recent rise in passenger satisfaction across North America appears to be a direct result of long-term facility investments. Michael Taylor, the managing director of travel, hospitality and retail at J.D. power, stated that the highest-ranked airports have all recently completed or are nearing the end of multiyear capital improvement projects.

Multi-year financial commitments to terminal upgrades and passenger amenities are yielding measurable results, according to the J.D. Power report. This trend of reinvestment is visible across all three measured categories: mega, large, and medium airports, as travelers increasingly reward facilities that prioritize ease of movement and reliability.

Minneapolis-Saint Paul’s 684-Point Lead Over Coastal Rivals

Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport managed to outshine better-known hubs in New York and Los Angeles to claim its third straight title. The airport achieved a score of 684, placing it ahead of Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, which earned 663 points, and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which followed with 642 points.

Travel expert Gary Leff, author of the View From the Wing blog , noted that the Minneapolis hub excels by providing ample amenities without requiring passengers to exit the security zone. Leff also highlighted the convenience of light rail access for local travelers, even if the physical distance between gates can occasionally be long.

The study, which was based on 24,710 completed surveys from U.S. and Canadian residents, suggests that Midwest hubs are successfully competing with coastal giants by focusing on the core pillars of the passenger experience: trust, staff, and terminal facilities.

Tampa and Charleston Secure Category Wins

While Minneapolis dominated the mega category, other regional hubs claimed victory in smaller classifications. Tampa International Airport took first place in the large airport category—defined by airports serving 10 million to 32.9 million passengers—with a score of 715, outpacing Portland International Airport and Dallas Love Field.

Tampa's success is bolstered by specific amenities like the SkyConnect people mover and free Wi-Fi,which help organize the passenger flow between the main terminal and the Rental Car Center. Similarly, Charleston International Airport emerged as the leader in the medium airport category with 712 points, ahead of Ontario International Airport and Indianapolis International Airport.

Can Bridget the AI Hologram Solve LaGuardia's Navigation Hurdles?

Despite significant technological investments, some major hubs still struggle with the fundamental goal of passenger efficiency.. New York LaGuardia Airport has introduced "Bridget," a conversational AI hologram designed to assist travelers in Terminal B with multilingual support and live mapping tools.

However, the effectiveness of such high-tech tools remains an open question for travelers. As Gary Leff pointed out to Fox News Digital, while LaGuardia’s Central Terminal is a beautiful facility, the airport remains relatively difficult to navigate.

It remains to be seen whether AI-driven assistance can truly compensate for complex terminal layouts. The J.D. Power data suggests that while digital tools are a welcome addition, they may not yet be a substitute for the seamless physical navigation found in top-ranked airports like Minneapolis-Saint Paul or San Francisco International Airport.
