United Airlines is increasing its checked baggage fees, following a similar announcement from JetBlue, as airlines grapple with rising operating costs.
Fee Increases Effective April 3rd
The new fee structure will be implemented for tickets purchased starting April 3rd. This represents a significant change for passengers who regularly check luggage on United flights.
New Baggage Fee Structure
- First & Second Bags (Prepaid): $45
- First & Second Bags (Check-in): $50
- First & Second Bags (Gate): $75
- Third Bag: Increased by $50
Passengers will now pay $45 for their first and second checked bags if the fees are paid in advance. Paying at check-in will incur a $50 charge, while gate check-in will be the most expensive option at $75 per bag. The fee for a third checked bag has also increased substantially.
Industry-Wide Trend Driven by Jet Fuel Costs
The announcement from United follows JetBlue’s earlier increase in baggage fees, indicating a broader industry response to escalating expenses. JetBlue publicly attributed its fee hike to rising operating costs.
A key factor driving these increases is the surge in jet fuel prices. According to the Argus US Jet Fuel Index, prices have nearly doubled since late February, rising from approximately $2.40 per gallon to $4.88.
Geopolitical tensions, including the ongoing air war on Iran, have significantly impacted jet fuel costs, directly affecting airline operating expenses and financial decisions.
Impact on Travelers
United Airlines confirmed the fee adjustments apply to customers traveling within the U.S., Mexico, Canada, and Latin America. This widespread implementation highlights the airline’s commitment to optimizing financial performance across its network.
Airlines are facing immense pressure to maintain profitability in a challenging market. While increasing baggage fees may be unpopular with some travelers, it’s a strategy to manage financial performance amid rising costs.
