Tech founder Adam Robinson and his family perished Sunday in a Learjet 60 crash in Florida. The group was flying from Austin to the Bahamas when the plane went down near West Palm Beach.

A 20,000-foot-per-minute descent into a West Palm Beach intersection

The fatal descent of the Learjet 60 occurred as the aircraft was traveling east over Florida at an altitude of 35,000 feet. According to the report, the plane's nose-dive ended in a fiery impact at an intersection, creating a massive crater in the road and scattering debris across the area.

The crash claimed the lives of nine people on board, including Robinson's wife, Helen Sharp, 40 , and their two young children, Emma, four, and Charlie, two. Also traveling with the family were their nanny, Anita Maria Cetina, and another couple, Rachael Reed and Charmi Fehr. While the impact was devastating, the report notes that no individuals on the ground were injured or killed during the incident.

The 'coffin corner' risk at 35,000 feet

Aviation experts are analyzing whether the aircraft fell victim to a phenomenon known as "coffin corner" during its flight. This dangerous condition occurs at high altitudes when the margin between a plane's stall speed and its maximum operating speed becomes extremely narrow, potentially making the aircraft uncontrollable. The report suggests that severe weather and ice may have contributed to this loss of control.

Cockpit voice recorder data provides a harrowing account of the final moments of the flight. Co-pilot Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras was heard warning air traffic control that the aircraft was descending at 20,000 feet per minute while banking 60 degrees. As the plane lost altitude , pilot Jeff Gregory, 55, was reportedly heard reciting the Lord's Prayer in the background. Prior to the descent, Filgueiras had sent a text message to her boyfriend, Justin, regarding heavy weather and turbulence.

Adam Robinson’s 'family-first' philosophy at Retention

Adam Robinson, the founder of the tech startup Retention, had built a professional reputation around the importance of prioritizing family over excessive labor. In an April social media post, Robinson argued against the tech industry trend of working 70 to 90 hours per week, noting that such schedules often lead to family resentment. To combat this, he implemented a policy at Retention that encourages employees to conclude their workdays by 5:00 or 5:30 PM to ensure they can return home to their loved ones.

Uncertainty over whether storm systems broke the jet apart

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading the investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash. One specific question investigators are pursuing is whether a portion of the Learjet 60 broke off while the aircraft was encountering intense storm systems. Additionally, officials must verify if the crash was the result of a mechanical failure or if environmental factors led to an aerodynamic stall. The report does not specify if any other parties have provided testimony regarding the flight's conditions prior to the descent.
