Red Lobster Considers 'Endless Shrimp' Revival
Red Lobster is reportedly exploring the possibility of reintroducing its famed 'Endless Shrimp' promotion as it works to revitalize sales after filing for bankruptcy in 2024. The promotion, which previously resulted in substantial financial losses, could return as a limited-time offer, potentially as early as this month.
Previous Losses and Customer Demand
The all-you-can-eat deal contributed to significant financial setbacks when it was made a permanent menu item in 2023. One customer reportedly consumed 108 shrimp in a single four-hour session, illustrating the potential for high consumption. Despite generating substantial customer traffic, the promotion resulted in approximately $11 million in losses in one quarter.
Company Response
A Red Lobster spokesperson stated the company currently has 'nothing to announce,' but acknowledged the promotion’s enduring popularity. They emphasized, 'Endless Shrimp has long been a Red Lobster guest favorite and one of our most popular promotions for 20 years. We’re always paying attention to what our guests are asking for.' The company is actively monitoring customer feedback.
Bankruptcy and Turnaround Strategy
Red Lobster filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May 2024, partially due to the financial strain caused by the 'Endless Shrimp' deal. CEO Damola Adamolekun, appointed in August 2024, is leading a comprehensive turnaround strategy.
Strategic Changes
Adamolekun’s plan includes streamlining the menu by approximately 20%, introducing new items like lobster bisque and seafood boils, and enhancing the in-restaurant dining experience. The company has already closed around 130 locations and is reevaluating its physical footprint.
“There's a lot of positive signs, but we inherited a very damaged brand, so there's still work to do to repair all of that,” Adamolekun stated in a February interview with The Wall Street Journal. The company is cautiously moving forward, evaluating all strategies to improve its position.
A History of Limited-Time Success
Prior to its expansion to a permanent menu item, the 'Endless Shrimp' promotion was successfully offered as a limited-time special for roughly two decades. This suggests that a carefully managed return could be viable.
