Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Tesla are collaborating to develop Terafab, a massive semiconductor manufacturing hub located in Grimes County,Texas. This project aims to create a vertically integrated facility capable of producing over 1 terawatt of compute annually for both terrestrial and space-based applications.
A 100-million-suqaare-foot leap over the New Century Global Center
The planned scale of the Terafab facility represents a massive jump in industrial architecture. According to the news report, the 100-million-square-foot complex would be more than five times the size of the current record holder, the New Century Global Center in Chengdu, China, which spans roughly 18.9 million square feet.
This move signals a shift toward extreme-scale manufacturing intended to meet the rising demands of artificial intelligence and space exploration. By housing logic, memory, and advanced packaging under a single roof,Terafab seeks to create a self-contained ecosystem for high-performance computing.
The $16.8 billion investment in Grimes County
Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced that the initial phase of the Terafab project involves a capital investment exceeding $16.8 billion. this massive influx of capital is expected to generate 3,000 new jobs for the region.
The project builds on existing industrial momentum in the state, where SpaceX already maintains its headquarters and Starbase launch facility.. As noted in the report, the state has previously extended a $30 million grant to SpaceX through the Texas Enterprise Fund to support its operations.
Powering 1 million Optimus robots and orbital launches
The technical ambitions of Terafab extend far beyond traditional silicon manufacturing. The Terafab website describes the facility as a cornerstone for a broader infrastructure vision that includes supporting as many as 1 million Tesla Optimus roobots.
Furthermore, the project is linked to Musk's goals of launching 10 million tons of mass into orbit annually and utilizing more than 1 terawatt of solar power. The facility is specifically designed to produce the AI chips necessary to sustain these massive technological leaps, bridging the gap between current production and future demand.
The hunt for tax freezes and JETI program support
To manage the immense costs of such a project, Terafab has filed eight tax incentive applications with two local school districts. these applications seek to freeze school maintenance and operations property taxes at approximately 48 percent of their appraised value for a 10-year period per phase.
The company is also requesting state assistance through the Texas Jobs, Energy, Technology, and Innovation (JETI) program to cover differences in maintenance and operations taxes. While the company argues these breaks are necessary to remain competitive with other locations, several questions remain unanswered. It is currently unclear how much total state funding will be granted through the JETI program, or whether local school districts will ultimately approve the requested 48 percent tax freeze. Additionally, the report does not clarify if other competing regions have made similar requests to offset cost differences.
