The $110 billion merger: a media behemoth in the making
The Department of Justice has approved the $110 billion merger between Paramount Global and Warner Bros. Discovery, a move that has been criticized for its potential to lead to increased consolidation and reduced competition in the media industry.
The merger, which was first announced in May, will combine two of Hollywood's most historic studios, creating a media behemoth with a vast film and television studio, CNN,HBO Max, and Paramount+ under its umbrella.
Consumer advocacy groups sound the alarm
Consumer advocacy groups and industry experts have slammed the DOJ's decision, warning of higher prices for consumers, job losses, and a narrowing of viewpoints in media and creative outlets.
Robert Weissman, co-president of Public Citizen, slammed the DOJ's decision, stating that it was 'straight from an authoritarian handbook' and a 'preview of what's to come under a Paramount-Warner Bros. merger.'
Weissman argued that the deal would lead to higher prices for consumers, job losses, and a narrowing of viewpoints in media and creative outlets.
Antitrust challenges ahead
Despite the DOJ's approval, the merger is not yet a done deal. Several states, including California, are weighing antitrust challenges to the merger.
Rob Bonta, California's Democratic Attorney General, is conducting a 'vigorous' review of the proposed merger to determine its impact on competition in entertainment, streaming, advertising, and labor markets.
What's next for the media industry?
The merger has been criticized for its potential to consolidate power for the Ellison family, who are known for their ties to former President Trump.
Jamie Raskin, a Democratic representative from Maryland and the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, warned that approval of the merger would result in 'unprecedented pro-MAGA editorial control' similar to what has been seen at CBS News and '60 Minutes.'
Raskin also expressed concern that the merger could lead to further increases in consumer prices for streaming, cable, and internet services.
