McDonald's reported a second-quarter shortfall in US sales growth, citing internal execution errors. the fast-food giant struggled to attract lower-income diners despite launching new budget-friendly menu options.
A 0.8% US sales growth miss vs. analyst expectations
McDonald's comparable sales in its primary US market grew by just 0.8% during the second quarter. this figure missed the 1.06% increase predicted by analysts, according to data compiled by LSEG. This represents a significant slowdown compared to the 2.5% growth recorded in the United States during the same period last year.
While the sales growth in the US lagged, the company's bottom line remained resilient. As reported by the company, adjuted earnings per share rose to $3.38, surpassing the $3.32 expected by the market. This profit beat helped lift McDonald's shares by nearly 2% in early trading, despite the stock having lost roughly 13% of its value so far this year.
The McValue platform and the retreat from digital deals
The company's attempt to capture budget-conscious diners through the McValue platform failed to generate the desired momentum. although McDonald's introduced a menu featuring items under $3 and a $4 breakfast deal in April, executives noted these offerings did not drive as much new traffic as anticipated.
CEO Chris Kempczinski attributed a significant portion of the traffic shortfall to a reduction in digital promotions. specifically, a pullback in "buy-one-add-one" offers and other digital deals led to a decline in visits from loyal customers. According to the report, these missing promotions accounted for approximately two-thirds of the traffic deficit seen this quarter.
Skye Anderson's mission to replace Joe Erlinger
McDonald's has appointed insider Skye Anderson to lead its US business in an effort to revitalize growth. Anderson succeeds Joe Erlinger and brings a background in both international markets and operations to the role. This leadership change signals management's urgency to correct recent performance issues.
Citi analysts suggested that Anderson's appointment could lead to more rapid implmentation of profit and sales initiatives. the move comes as the company attempts to redirect marketing spend toward proven value platforms and more targeted loyalty member promotions.
The mismatch between $4 breakfast deals and rising fuel costs
The central challenge for McDonald's remains the shrinking discretionary inncome of its core customer base. Higher costs for fuel and essential goods have made eating out a luxury for many lower-income consumers, a segment that has seen international operated markets sales growth slow to 1.5% from 4% a year ago.
Several questions remain regarding the effectiveness of the new strategy. It is unclear how much the restoration of national digital offers will actually move the needle on foot traffic. Furthermore, the company has not yet detailed how it will combat the broader economic pressures that are keeping its most price-sensitive customers away from the drive-thru.
