Tether is collaborating with Kazakhstan's National Bank and the Alatau City Authority to investigate a blockchain-based stablecoin. this digital asset would be pegged one-to-one with the Kazakh tenge to modernize the country's financial infrastructure.
Building on the September 2025 Solana and Mastercard pilot
This collaboration follows a previous effort in September 2025, where a consortium including Intebix, the Solana blockchain, Mastercard, and Eurasian Bank launched a pilot to link crypto services to existing payment systems. According to the report, the new involvement of Tether offers Kazakhstan a different strategic path, potentially providing greater liquidity and a more expansive global reach than previous local initiatives.
While the previous project focused on connecting existing infrastructure, this new partnership with Tether and the National Bank of Kazakhstan is centered on the fundamental viability of a digital national currency. The goal is to leverage the speed and transparency of distributed ledger technology while maintaining a stable value relative to the tenge.
Tokenizing real-world assets via the Tether Hadron platform
A central component of this research involves Tether’s Hadron platform, which is designed to allow organizations to create digitalized versions of physical or traditional assets. By using Hadron, the partners in Kazakhstan aim to establish a framework for converting real-world assets into blockchain-based tokens.
The Alatau City Authority may eventually serve as a testing ground for a pilot program to see how these tokenized assets function in a controlled, local environment. This approach allows the National Bank of Kazakhstan to observe the practical application of digital assets within a specific jurisdiction before a wider national rollout.
The search for a blockchain network and collateral assets
Despite the high-profile nature of the announcement, several critical technical details remain unverified. The report notes that the partners have not yet disclosed the following:
- Which specific blockchain network will support the tenge-linked token.
- Who the final issuer of the digital asset will be.
- What speicfic assets will serve as collateral to ensure the token's stability.
This lack of detail confirms that the project is still in a foundational research stage.. The current focus remains on building a theoretical framework rather than launching a live financial instrument.
Training the National Bank of Kazakhstan on reserve management
To prepare for this transition, the partnership will host specialized workshops for government officials and employees of the National Bank of Kazakhstan. These educational sessions will focus on the intricacies of stablecoin mechanics and the complexities of reserve management.
The objective is to bridge the knowledge gap between traditional banking and decentralized finance. By teaching state actors how to bring conventional real-world assets onto the blockchain, Tether and the Alatau City Authority hope to create a sustainable and transparent digital finance infrastructure for the Republic of Kazakhstan.
