Costco is launching a major expansion across North America, with 14 new warehouse locations scheduled to open throughout October and November. This rollout includes various U.S. states and two Canadian provinces as the retailer seeks to deepen its market penetration.
The October and November rollout across 14 locations
The upcoming expansion schedule begins in October with five new openings in Lee's Summit, Missouri; The Colony, Texas; Amherst, New York; Lawrence, Kansas; and Camarillo, California. These locations represent a targeted push into key regional markets to satisfy growing membership demand.
As the report indicates, November will see an even larger surge with nine additional warehouses. This November wave includes five U.S. locations in South Meridian, Idaho; Vallejo, California; Chandler, Arizona; Newport News, Virginia; and Franklin, Wisconsin. The Canadian expansion also accelerates in November, with four new sites: Northeast Edmonton and Lloydminster in Alberta, alongside East Windsor and Wasaga Beach in Ontario.
A 163,000-square-foot upgrade in Newport News
Costco is not just entering new territories but is also modernizing its existing footprint. In Newport News, Virginia, the company is replacing a facility that has been operational since 1988. According to the report , Costco purchased a 32-acre property a few blocks from the original site to construct a much larger 163,000-square-foot retail warehouse that will also feature a fuel station.
Ron Vachris's goal of 30 annual warehouse openings
This immediate expansion is a precursor to a much more ambitious long-term strategy. cEO Ron Vachris has stated that the company aims to open 30 or more warehouses every year over the next five to ten years. This growth is intended to capitalize on the increasing demand for the company's membership-based shopping model.
The long-term vision involves a global reach, with Vachris noting that approximately half of these future openings will be in the United States. The remaining half is expected to be distributed across international markets, including Mexico, Canada, Asia, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.
Which of the proposed sites will actually break ground?
While the immediate schedule is confirmed, several questions remain regarding the company's "exploring" phase. The rpeort mentions that Costco is looking into potential warehouses in Fresno, California; Lake St. Louis, Missouri; Southborough, Massachusetts; Silver Spring, Maryland; Scottsdale, Arizona; and Des Plaines, Illinois. However, it remains unverified when these locations will move from the planning stage to active construction. Additionally , while the company is expanding in many areas, residents in Rhode Island, West Virginia, and Wyoming will have to wait, as no new state expansions are currently expected for them.
