Belmont Race Track in Elmont, New York, is currently undergoing a $100 million modernization of its facilities and racing surfaces. The venue is preparing for a full operational return by early 2027, which will be marked by the homecoming of the Belmont Stakes.
The $100 million pivot from peanut galleries to luxury hospitality
The redesign of Belmont Race Track represents a strategic shift in how horse racing is consumed in the digital age. According to the report, the design team has moved away from traditional, large-scale "peanut-gallery" seating in favor of intimate, action-oriented arrangements. This includes the introduction of "big red" padded seats on the home stretch, specifically tinted to honor the legendary horse Secretariat.
This transition reflects a broader industry trend where historic sporting venues must evolve into multi-purpose entertainment hubs to compete with online betting and home streaming. By integrating a climate-controlled grandstand for 10,000 spectators and maintaining the ability to host 50,000 people for major events,Belmont Race Track is attempting to blend the prestige of the sport with the comforts of a modern stadium.
How the one-mile Tapeta oval replaces Aqueduct Racetrack
A critical technical component of the renovatiion is the installation of a one-mile synthetic Tapeta oval. As the report says, this surface is designed to serve as the primry winter track, effectively filling the operational gap created by the recent closure of Aqueduct Racetrack. This addition complements the venue's existing 1.5-mile dirt course and two turf tracks.
The move to a synthetic surface and climate-controlled interiors addresses a long-standing weakness of the Elmont facility: the weather. Historically, events like the October Breeders' Cup were plagued by chilly conditions due to a lack of heated areas. The new infrastructure ensures that the racing experience remains viable and comfortable regardless of the New York winter.
Marc Forgione’s culnary vision for the Turf Club
To attract a more affluent demographic, Belmont Race Track has partnered with Food Network star and Floral Park native Marc Forgione. Forgione will oversee the Turf Club and other dining venues, introducing a high-end menu featuring items such as bone-marrow gremolata sauces, chicken cooked under a brick, and chili lobster on Texas toast.
This culinary upgrade is part of a larger campus synergy. The family owning Belmont Race Track also owns the nearby UBS Arena and a significant shopping district. By treating the track as part of a "personal triple crown" of entertainment assets, the owners are positioning the venue as a destination for luxury tourism rather than just a gambling hall.
The race to finish luxury suites by late 2026
Despite the progress, several key components of the Belmont Race Track campus remain unfinished. According to Roger Cettina, senior vice president at AECOM Tishman, the project is still a work in progress; currently, only two of the grandstannd's five levels are open to the public. While the ground floor and NYRA Bets room are functional, the luxury suites, wedding hall, and a balcony overlooking the New York City skyline are not expected to be completed until the end of 2026.
Several logistical questions remain regarding the final phase of construction. It is still unclear when the underground tunnel leading to the parking complex and the newly accessible infield will be fully opened for public use... Furthermore, while the report details the amenities provided by the owners, it does not specify if the increased overhead of these luxury upgrades will lead to higher ticketing prices for general admission fans upon the 2027 reopening.
