The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) has ordered MAGA Energy Ltd. to suspend all operations, citing significant financial instability and failure to meet environmental and regulatory obligations.
Financial and Regulatory Non-Compliance
MAGA Energy, a Calgary-based oil and gas company, faces suspension due to unpaid taxes, debts to the AER and the Orphan Well Association, and an inability to fulfill its regulatory and liability commitments. The AER determined the company lacks the financial resources to meet these obligations.
Tax Arrears and Municipal Impact
The financial implications extend beyond the AER, with MAGA Energy owing over $356,000 in unpaid property taxes and penalties to Sturgeon County. County officials are concerned about recovering these funds should the company dissolve, highlighting the need for stronger enforcement of property tax obligations.
Broader Industry Concerns
Data reveals a wider issue of unpaid taxes within Alberta’s oil and gas sector. As of December 31, 2025, over $6.8 million in property taxes remained outstanding to Sturgeon County alone. A 2023 report indicated MAGA Energy owed over $230,000 dating back to 2021.
A 2023 directive aimed to prevent the transfer of wells to companies with tax arrears, but questions remain regarding its effectiveness.
Reactions to the Suspension
Landowners, such as Mark Dorin, believe the AER should have intervened sooner, citing the company’s failure to pay taxes and royalties. The current government views the suspension as proof that existing policies are effectively holding companies accountable.
Expert Concerns and Environmental Risks
Janetta McKenzie from the Pembina Institute suggests the AER may not be enforcing its responsibilities promptly enough. Concerns have also been raised about potential environmental damage from improperly suspended wells, including methane leaks and water contamination. Approximately $250 million in unpaid taxes from oil and gas companies may be unrecoverable.
The AER has given MAGA Energy two weeks to shut down wells, power off equipment, and discontinue pipeline use.
