While the state of Alaska plans to construct more than 150 new weather stations, local air carriers argue that this expansion is secondary to the failure of current systems. During the roundtable discussion, Sen. Dan Sullivan highlighted the state's high rate of plane crashes and fatalities to emphasize the urgency of reliable weather reporting. To solve the maintenance lag, Sen. Dan Sullivan proposed contracting local transportation staff to handle repairs. This would eliminate the current inefficiency of waiting for Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) technicians to travel from out of state to fix localized equipment failures.
In addition to local staffing, the summit attendees suggested the creation of a spare part depot located within Alaska.
