Britain's Local Garages Under Pressure
Independent car garages across the United Kingdom are facing a significant crisis, with many at risk of closure due to a confluence of challenging factors. These businesses are grappling with rising operational costs, a shortage of qualified technicians for electric vehicles (EVs), an aging workforce, and evolving consumer preferences.
Rising Costs and Workforce Challenges
A recent investigation by Auto Express revealed a ‘perfect storm’ impacting the industry. Nine out of ten garages cited escalating operating costs – including wage increases, energy bills, and business rates – as their primary concern. This follows earlier warnings from the Daily Mail and This is Money regarding potential increases in repair costs due to mechanic shortages and inflated parts prices.
Aging Workforce and Recruitment Difficulties
The automotive sector currently has 19,000 vacancies. A significant portion of the existing workforce is nearing retirement, with 47% over the age of 45 and 144,000 expected to retire by 2032. A ClickMechanic survey found that 70% of garages struggle to recruit mechanics under 25, and over a third find attracting younger staff ‘very difficult’.
The Electric Vehicle Transition
The shift towards electric vehicles presents a major hurdle for smaller garages. They struggle to afford the necessary investment in training and specialized equipment required to safely service EVs. The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) reports that currently, only one in four UK mechanics are accredited to work on EVs.
Shortage of EV Technicians
Forecasts predict a widening gap between the demand for and supply of EV technicians. The IMI projects a potential shortfall of over 44,000 EV-qualified technicians by 2035. While the number of qualified technicians is expected to increase to 137,000 by 2032 and 193,000 by 2035, demand is projected to outpace certification rates, especially in the early 2030s.
Changing Consumer Habits
The rise of on-demand repair services, similar to subscription models like Netflix, is also impacting traditional garages. Gen Z consumers are increasingly prioritizing convenience and digital solutions. This combination of factors creates a challenging outlook for many independent garages in Britain.
