Ford Issues Recall for 1.4 Million F-150 Trucks
Ford Motor Company has issued a significant safety recall affecting approximately 1.4 million F-150 trucks. The recall concerns vehicles manufactured between the 2015 and 2017 model years.
Transmission Downshift Issue
The problem stems from a software defect within the vehicle’s powertrain control module, specifically related to the transmission range sensor. A faulty sensor can cause the transmission to unexpectedly downshift into second gear, regardless of vehicle speed.
Potential Safety Risks
This unexpected downshifting can lead to a sudden loss of control, particularly at highway speeds. The unpredictable shift could destabilize the truck and potentially cause accidents, including rear-end collisions.
Affected Vehicles and Warning Signs
The recall impacts 1,392,935 vehicles equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Drivers may receive a warning of the issue through the illumination of a wrench-shaped indicator light on the dashboard. This light indicates a problem with the powertrain control module interpreting signals from the transmission.
Recall Process and Repair Options
Ford will begin notifying owners via mail next week with instructions on how to address the recall. Repairs will be provided free of charge at authorized service centers.
Temporary and Permanent Fixes
Ford is developing a permanent solution to the sensor signal degradation. In the meantime, dealers will perform a software update on the powertrain control module to prevent unexpected downshifting.
