BMW 7 Series Receives Landmark Update

BMW has unveiled a comprehensive update for its flagship 7 Series luxury saloon, representing the most significant overhaul in the model’s history. This refresh aims to solidify the 7 Series’ position as a leader in the luxury segment, competing with models like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and EQS.

Enhanced Electric Range for i7

The electric i7 receives the most substantial improvements, adopting BMW’s sixth-generation cylindrical battery cells, previously used in the iX3 SUV and upcoming i3 saloon. This new battery technology boosts the i7’s maximum range to an impressive 452 miles, a significant increase from the previous 387 miles.

Improved Charging and Performance

The i7’s charging rate has been increased to 250kW, enabling faster charging times. More efficient electrically excited synchronous motors also contribute to the extended range. The i7 50 xDrive delivers 449bhp and 442lb ft of torque, while the M70 xDrive boasts 671bhp and 749lb ft, accelerating from 0-62mph in just 3.8 seconds.

Plug-in Hybrid Upgrades

Plug-in hybrid variants of the 7 Series also receive notable upgrades, featuring BMW’s latest straight-six petrol engine with a new turbocharger paired with an electric motor. The 750e xDrive combines for a total output of 482bhp and 516lb ft, while the M760e xDrive delivers 604bhp and 590lb ft – a 40bhp increase.

PHEV Efficiency and Performance

The PHEV models retain the existing 18.7kWh Gen5 battery, providing an electric-only range of 50 miles. Powertrain enhancements contribute to improved overall efficiency and performance, with a 0-62mph time of 4.2 seconds for the M760e xDrive.

Refined Design and Technology

All 7 Series models feature adaptive dampers and active rear steering as standard, enhancing both ride comfort and handling. The exterior design has been subtly refined to align with BMW’s new Neue Klasse aesthetic, including slimmer headlights with crystal elements and a revised grille.

Interior Enhancements

Inside, the updated 7 Series introduces a standard passenger screen. The cabin adopts Neue Klasse design principles, featuring a 17.9-inch slanted central touchscreen and a redesigned steering wheel. Rear passengers can enjoy a 31.3-inch 8K cinema screen with a 35-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system.

Luxury and Personalization

Optional Executive Lounge chairs offer enhanced comfort with Alcantara trim and full reclinability. BMW’s design team focused on creating a serene rear environment, minimizing distractions. The 7 Series also features automatically opening doors.

Bespoke Options

Extensive personalization options remain a hallmark of the 7 Series, with over 700 interior material combinations and 500 exterior color choices available. Customers can now opt for a two-tone exterior finish. Max Missoni, BMW’s lead designer for luxury models, emphasized the integration of Neue Klasse design with luxury, stating the car is designed to exude presence and offer a private, relaxing retreat.
