The Minack Theatre, an open-air venue in the seaside village of Porthcurno, Cornwall, has canceled its production of Lakmé by Léo Delibes after receiving a complaint about cultural insensitivity.
Complaint from Rajan Zed
The decision follows criticism from Rajan Zed, president of the Universal Society of Hinduism. Zed accused the theatre of promoting "shallow exoticism based on prejudice" and expressed disapproval of the production by Surrey Opera.
Theatre's Response
In response to the complaint, the Minack Theatre issued trigger warnings and consulted with the production company before ultimately canceling the show. The theatre cited Zed’s concerns as the primary reason for the cancellation.
Cultural Sensitivity Concerns
Zed’s complaint highlighted the opera’s portrayal of Indian culture, which he argued was insensitive and perpetuated stereotypes. The Minack Theatre acknowledged these concerns and decided to withdraw the production to avoid further controversy.
The cancellation underscores ongoing debates about cultural representation in the arts and the responsibility of theatres to address such issues proactively.
