Artemis II Mission Concludes
The crew of Artemis II successfully splashed down in the Earth’s ocean at 7:07 p.m. Central Time on Friday, completing a 10-day mission that included a flyby of the far side of the moon. This marks the first crewed return to the moon since 1972. According to the broadcast, the mission is a crucial step towards a planned moon landing in 2028.
Retired Canadian astronauts Chris Hadfield and Dr. Roberta Bondar, appearing on CBC, lauded the mission's success. Hadfield described the mission as “inevitably easy” despite being a “brand new rocket” and “brand new spaceship.” Bondar emphasized the importance of Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen’s role, stating he represents “the best that we have of a generation and a best that we have of an explorer.” She added that Hansen will “carry the torch for Canada always.”
The Artemis II mission also focused on understanding the effects of deep space travel on the human body, including radiation exposure, the impact of microgravity, and cognitive function. NASA utilized new radiation sensors and “organ chips” containing cells from the astronauts to study these effects, with potential applications for medical treatments on Earth. Researchers are also investigating the reactivation of dormant viruses during spaceflight and monitoring changes in the astronauts’ vision.
