The Artemis II crew, consisting of three American astronauts and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen, successfully concluded their 10-day lunar mission with a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean on Friday, as reported by CBC News. The landing occurred at approximately 7:07 p.m. Central Time.

Historic Journey and Canadian Participation

The mission involved a flyby of the far side of the moon and represented the first crewed return from the moon since 1972. Jeremy Hansen became the first Canadian to venture into deep space during the mission. Throughout the journey, the crew maintained communication with Earth, sharing experiences and private family moments via video chats.

Mission Highlights and Future Plans

During the mission, the crew experienced a period of radio blackout while traveling behind the moon. The re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere was described as risky, with the capsule traveling at 32 times the speed of sound. Concerns about the heat shield’s integrity were present, but ultimately, the system performed as expected.

NASA is now focused on future Artemis missions, including Artemis 3, planned for next year, which will test docking with a moon lander, and Artemis 4, slated for 2028, aiming to land astronauts on the moon again. The Canadian Space Agency is also contributing to future lunar exploration through the development of technologies for science and human exploration.

International Collaboration and AI Integration

The broadcast also highlighted discussions regarding potential Canadian partnerships with China in renewable energy technologies. Lei Zhang, CEO of Envision, proposed replicating a Chinese model of AI-managed wind hubs in the Canadian wilderness. However, concerns were raised by Ontario Premier Doug Ford regarding the security implications of relying on Chinese-operated AI systems for critical infrastructure. Greenpeace China noted that while China is expanding renewable energy, it continues to approve new coal plants.

Following medical checks, the crew will head to NASA’s Johnson Space Center and reunite with their families.
