The $30 million anime adaptation gamble pays off

Crunchyroll CEO Rahul Purini has confirmed that Solo Leveling Season 3 is in the works, but no release date has been set. Fans are eagerly awaiting more information, and some are hoping for a bigger update at Anime Expo 2026.

The anime has seen a meteoric rise to success around the world, and studios are clearly scrambling to keep up with demand. So far, there has not even been confirmation that a third season was on the way - though there is plenty of material beyond the original novels for the anime team to adapt.

Why 4,000 unsold units became the prize

Solo Leveling fans have been extremely lucky in this regard.. The series debuted in January of 2024 with 12 episodes, and was followed promptly with a second season one year later, with the 13-episode Season 2 concluding in March of 2025.

A recent example is Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2, which rushed to air with infamously unfinished animation sequences. The show was touched up and corrected for later releases, but after that, fans were happy to wait nearly three years for a more polished Season 3 to air.

What auditors flagged in the May filing

The series started as a Korean web novel in 2016, which was adapted into a webtoon comic in 2018. The anime adaptation sttarted in 2024, and it demands a lot of translation and coordination overseas. That's before it is translated, dubbed in English, and shipped to the U.S.

An echo of Sydney's 2024 institutional buy-up

Of course, that sounds like good news to fans around the world, though this might be a good time to temper expectations. The anime industry has a history of long wait times between seasons, which is preferable to the alternative of seeing animators and studio staff working to exhaustion to meet deadlines.

Hopefully, Solo Leveling will find a healthy balance in the streaming era. Even if the next release is months or years away, the people behind Solo Leveling may want to present something at Anime Expo 2026 just to keep the hype alive and celebrate the series' incredible success over the last two years.
